Geology lecturer, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.
I began seriously taking photos at the end of 2003 when my parents bought me my first camera to use for geology fieldwork as a student. I started using online photo-sharing websites to find photos of places I was travelling to and to get ideas, and decided that I wanted to give something back and help others get ideas and get inspired about New Zealand. Am completely self-taught, mainly through these websites and getting inspiration from all of you :) Thank you all very much for your support and encouragement!
My husband Dave and I are Kiwis. We live in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand/Aotearoa (although Dave is originally from Rotorua in the North Island). We love to travel and really love the outdoors! We have two young boys who share our love of exploring the natural world!
We really love our little country so most of my photos are New Zealand landscapes (but also landscapes from our travels) and particularly anything to do with rocks/geology. I have a particular love for black and white formats.
Some New Zealand photographers I find inspiring: Craig Potton, Andris Apse, Rob Brown and Lloyd Homer (a geology photographer from the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences).
Also Peter Dombrovskis and Ian Wallace of Tasmania, Joe Cornish of Britain, Americans Don Paulson, Marc Adamus, Galen Rowell and Ansel Adams

I just have to say that Kate's photography is outstanding. If you want to see some of the natural splendour of NZ, Kate is amongst the best I have found so far at capturing it. Nice work, you never fail to make me miss home! :)
Great portfolio your showing here. Awesome pictures from your beautiful country. I really want to come back to NZ and every time I look your pictures I feel I have to do it as soon as possible :-)

Read lessIt's geology but is it art? It certainly is when klb49 is behind the camera. She's the proof of what John Ruskin said in "Modern Painters", the manifesto of all mountain photographers - you have to understand the landscape to depict it. Take a look at these pages and you'll understand the landscape too ....
Kate, boy do you deserve these few words from my heart. Your work has given me and Flickr an emosional lift that is very rare to find. Pitty your taken and only 24!
