Che cosa è per me la fotografia?

Fondamentalmente un modo di memorizzare le immagini della vita in modo più nitido e meno effimero di quanto possa fare il cervello; questo conserva sì tante immagini del passato, ma in modo molto compresso, labile e sfocato. E sin dall'antichità l'uomo ha cercato tecniche per rendere meno effimera la memoria visiva: pitture, quadri, sculture e dall'Ottocento la fotografia appunto.

Le foto diventano quindi parte fondamentale della mia memoria visiva; che cosa ricorderei della mia vita di decenni fa senza le foto? Solo immagini sfumate e confuse! La conferma la ho tutte le volte che mi capita di ritrovare la foto di una persona o di un luogo che non vedevo da decenni e del quale non conservavo immagini fotografiche: quasi sempre resto sorpreso a vedere quella foto, e a realizzare quanto male ricordavo il volto di quella persona o l'aspetto di quel luogo.

Questo è fondamentalmente il senso che io dò alla fotografia. Non cercate quindi tra le mie foto fotografie artistiche o effetti speciali; non è il mio genere. Certo se mi capita di vedere un bel tramonto o qualche colpo d'occhio sorprendente non resisto alla tentazione di fotografarlo ma sempre per il motivo detto sopra: conservare una memoria meno effimera di quell'evento. Per questi fini non sono necessarie tecniche sofisticate o fotocamere di gran costo.

What is for me the picture?

Basically a way to store the images of life more clearly and less ephemeral than does the brain retains this so many images of the past, but in a very compressed, blurred and out of focus. And since ancient times man has sought techniques to make less ephemeral visual memory: paintings, paintings, sculptures and photography from the nineteenth century in fact.
