Artist Statement:
Paint is more than a medium that carries pigment. It mediates between the artist and object, object and viewer, and mitigates the conceptual dryness of purely idea-based art. Its presence transforms the intellectual into the sensual.
My paintings are a direct byproduct of intense involvement with improvisational music and free-verse poetic composition. They are about expressive freedom, dramatic and evolutionary movement, balance and integrity/synthesis, and ultimately about natural order. What drives movement is tension. I like to think of my paintings as places where the most divergent and unexpected things collide, converging at just the right time into articulate realizations of new compositional possibilities.

Lee Kaloidis’s art is the picture of serendipity. Serendipity for me, because I stumbled into a magical world of beautiful abstract paintings, which light up my life every day. Serendipity for you, too, because you are reading this now and have also discovered his enormous talent and enchanting creations. And serendipity for Lee, himself, because like a magnet, his irresistible work has drawn out the smiles, admiration, and testimonials of friends he never knew existed. I wish you infinite inspiration, Lee, so that you will continue to shower us with your splendid paintings until all of flickrdom is at your feet.

I think he is alive - though I have never met him face to face yet I regard him as family - we have become very close via the internet. I love his work - and how he occasionally destroys it to make new work - surprising me every time. It's great too that he knows a lot of stuff that I don't know and yet still agrees with me occasionally, but not about the couch in the livingrom. he has a wacky sense of humor, and lots of keftedis. In my opinion, he is one of the true leaders of the Flickr art community and a living pillar of modern art.

Lee is one of the best artists (and amongst the wisest) on Flickr, and for that matter anywhere. His beautiful gestural abstract expressionist works draw partly on his amazing musical talents as a jazz musician, and also on his deep humanity. His work demonstrates clearly that he is able to 'let go' whilst also keeping a degree of control, in a manner that only the very best artists are able to achieve, allowing the works to express almost shamanic qualities of joy and depth. The best way to describe them, for me, is to think of a visual version of fine free expression jazz. His command of composition, colour and form is excellent and his ability to envisage three dimensions in just two and bring out this quality in his works is amazing. Lee is a fine artist in every fiber of his being and I commend all who read this to take a look at his works since, if you view them with an open mind, your life can only be enhanced by the experience.

I just recently stumbled upon the work on this page and read the story on your profile -- what a wonderful, clear and moving statement! I too have found painting as a way of breaking through a breakdown and also a really wonderful way of connecting with other people. But therapy aside, the pieces found in your stream are genuine works of art, in their own right. I find myself just gazing at them... thank you for your work!
