Bikes, street art, trees, and other delights of the mostly-urban landscape. I seem to have more photos of pavement here than I planned to, there should be more trees.

This Flickr stream started out as Yahoo! Group photos for a trip to China in 2005, and I've been feeding it pics ever since. I seem to prefer Canons, though in all honesty I could stand to know more about what I'm doing with them. I also fool with phone apps (Hipstamatic is my favorite), giving myself less control over things, and I'm not so sure about the results. It's all an experimental work in progress ...

The metadata here is great! I spend perhaps too much time getting things just right on the map, and I'm fastidious about tags. The ones with a # in front live a double life, as hashtags on Mastodon, Tumblr, wherever.

Mini-Timeline

Like a lot of people I took a camera on vacations but never thought about "photography" per se. In the 1990s I was bringing cheap cameras (disposable plastic cameras refilled with 35mm film) to protests and Critical Mass rides to document harassment by police and others, and I caught a few pics of the bike culture going on then. Still didn't think of myself as "a photographer" then. I've backfilled my Flickr stream with some of these.

I got my first digital camera for $0 down and 0% interest in 2004 to document the Bike National Convention and police harassment of same. I used the same camera to populate and transform the Time's Up! website. That camera died shortly after its 1-year warranty expired. This experience apparently qualified me to be trusted with a new digital camera for a 2005 journey to China.

I credit Flickr for keeping me interested in photography, and for being my first and best social network. Along the way I've experimented with bad cellphone cameras and apps to cope with them, while steadily improving my "prosumer" cameras. I've learned some fun tricks with both varieties of camera and I'll keep sharing them with you.

I'm Male and Achin'.
