The Jewish Women’s Archive is dedicated to uncovering, chronicling, and transmitting to a broad public the rich history of American Jewish women.
One of the first Jewish organizations to recognize and invest in the potential of the Internet for academic, cultural, archival, and educational purposes, JWA continues to use technology to collect and share Jewish women's stories. Its innovative website, jwa.org, provides free access to a wide range of resources on American Jewish women, past and present, celebrated and unknown.
Images of American Jewish Women and World War II: The stories and documents of American Jews who lived through World War II, as well as the materials they saved from the war years, are in danger of being lost forever.
In 2008, JWA launched a pilot project to assemble an online collection of material on Jewish American women’s experiences during the World War II era, both on the home front and in the armed services. We co-sponsored “Road Shows” in Boston and Hartford, where community members brought photographs and other documents to be scanned. We worked with the Jewish Historical Societies of Greater Hartford and Greater New Haven to collect material in their local communities. The images presented here come from the public scanning events or from the collections of the historical societies and the Jewish Women’s Archive.
JWA will continue to add images to American Jewish Women and World War II. If you would like to contribute to the collection, please go to our website for instructions. For more information about the Jewish Women’s Archive, visit jwa.org or contact jwaonline@jwa.org.
