DIY microscopes workshop

Bob Goldstein, UNC Chapel Hill

I've been building microscopes based on Kenji Yoshino's design, described in his Instructable entitled "$10 Smartphone to digital microscope conversion!". Kenji developed a simple and really clever design for a low cost, Do-It-Yourself microscope that takes advantage of ubiquitous smartphone cameras. In the past few years I've been doing occasional workshops at a school, a children's museum, an educators' conference, and in university classes, in an effort to get these microscopes into the hands of other people — especially teachers and kids. The teacher workshops have involved mostly elementary and middle school teachers, who bring their microscopes back to their classrooms for kids to use in classroom science projects.
