I'm a professional geographer and an amateur photographer. I am loving this new hobby! I am here to learn as much as I possibly can about what makes a great photo.

Born in the Philippines and raised in the United States, I've lived many places in my life: Quezon City, Chicago area, upstate New York, central Connecticut, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Berkeley, Washington DC, New Jersey, and now central Texas. I have been a professor at Texas State University and the University of Texas at Austin, and I'm now the environmental education coordinator for a water quality program funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Here is my favorite photography story: I once interned for the Geography Education Program at the National Geographic Society. One thing that I saw while there was a National Geographic photographer leaving on assignment with two plastic shoeboxes full of 35mm film. I realized, "Hey, he is taking that many pictures, and the magazine article will have, what, 12 photos? Ah! That's how you get great photos!"

I especially like to photograph subjects that I see in daily life "as is," without any staging. I am amazed that once I start looking for interesting pictures, the world around me gets more interesting. The more I take pictures, the more beauty I see in the world.
