Just another wage-slave trying to raise a family.

A couple years ago I realized I wasn't getting pictures of all the good times with my kids. I only have a few more years and I didn't want them to slip away. And I always wanted to take up photography as a hobby. So... with an uncomfortably large investment in "toys" I started "photo-safari parenting."

After a while though I couldn't ignore my parents' often repeated pleas to "Send us pictures of our grandchildren!!" So I setup this site so they can login and get updates. They're pretty happy with it. But now I get "When are you going to post those?"

Last year, while playing with my new zoom lens at Tyler's little league games, one of our baseball moms said, "I don't bring my camera enough." And you know what? That means I'm not the only parent that does that. It's hard to bring it all the time. It's difficult to get it out, run around in the hot sun, and then hope the pictures turn out. Wouldn't it be nice to share the effort and the results?

So... since I already promised myself to get out there anyway.. and my photography could use the practice... and other parents might actually like more pictures of their kids... I assumed the self-assigned role of unofficial team photographer. I took hundreds of pictures and I picked out the best ones to post and share.

And, to my surprise, some of them turned out pretty darn good. Most parents didn't leave online comments, but I got some positive EMails from happy parents (and some grandparents) and one "my husband printed that out, framed it, and took it to the office." Aha! Success!

There is something about catching a kid totally focused and happy that is just compelling. I work hard trying to be a good parent. And it doesn't come too easy to me. But it makes it all worthwhile to catch that moment in time where a kid is totally focused and happy. My son making a play at third, a cub scout catching his first fish, the pitcher winding up for his best throw. Makes me smile and keeps me getting up and going to work every morning.
