José Sarmento Matos

José Sarmento Matos, born in 1988, is a London and Lisbon-based freelance photojournalist. After finishing his bachelor degree in Media Studies and Journalism (2010) in Lisbon, José traveled and worked around Asia and Australia, worked in Switzerland as photographer and worked as a photojournalist intern in the Portuguese newspaper Público.
In 2014 he studied towards a Masters Degree in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication with Paul Lowe, Max Houghton and Edmund Clark.
José is now part of a new European documentary collective project, Project Sea Change, where 13 photographers, such as Jocelyn Bain Hogg, Pep Bonet, Donald Weber, Benedicte Kursen, Joanna Demarco..., documented the European youth and their challenges. The book will be released in January 2015 and exhibited around Europe: www.projectseachange.com
His work has been published in Financial Times, The Guardian, Sunday Times, Jornal Público and won recently a award of FT with a ongoing project in London, "Chasing London".
Jose is currently focusing on the current uncertain social situation in Europe. He analyses relevant contemporary issues by focusing on people´s personal stories.
