My father gave me my first toolbox when I was four. He cleared the trees from the land that he bought from my grandmother, and then used the wood from the trees to build the house that I grew up in. Before I was fourteen, we had built five boats together. The process that I engage in with my sculpture today usually begins with wood and with skills that I learned as a child. From there, I add whatever material will best communicate the idea. In recent years I have used a wide variety of materials, including cast glass, stainless steel, polyester, bronze, steel, aluminum, ceramic, paper, and stone. I am very excited about the current direction of my work. I am enjoying both the scale and the combination of materials in the installation-oriented pieces as well as the public art works.

I have know Jon professionally for many years, I would guess around 14 years. I knew him professionally as a sculptor and a very talented and gifted individual, one that I admired quite well. Then I became the director of the school of art so was able to commission him to make a sculpture for our College which was extremely successful. I highly recommend him, as he is reliable and worthy of commissions.

I worked with Jonathan on the Orlando Hilton commission and he was not only a joy to work with, but the commission has been a huge hit at the property. I would hire Jonathan again and again to help with future projects!

Judith Wellington

President and CEO - Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West VIrginia

The Clay Center commissioned Jonathan Cox for a wall sculpture. This magnificent piece is hanging prominently in the Center's Founders Lounge and is a tribute to one of the founders of the Center. Jonathan was very easy to work with and was sensitive to the needs of the Center and to the site where the piece would be displayed. In addition to the commission Jonathan has participated in three exhibitions during my 12-year tenure at the museum. All these exhibitions and Jonathan’s work has been well-received by the public.
