John Himmelfarb

John Himmelfarb is an artist whose lush, calligraphic drawings and paintings have always been driven by an unceasing devotion to line. Consistently blurring the boundaries between drawing and painting, Himmelfarb revels in line’s evocative potential to create a synthesis of graphic sign, text and elusive image that challenges one’s ability to interpret visual language.

John has exhibited nationally and internationally for many years. His work is now in over 40 museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, La Bibliothèque Nationale de France, The British Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), and the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea. Awards include grants from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation, Chicago Artists Abroad, the Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, and the National Endowment For The Arts.
