I was immediately drawn to James' photostream by his romantic aesthetic and emotive portrait work. His photography communicates a sort of nostalgia that makes the moments in his images seem like distant memories; images depicting the fragmented youth of another age. The juxtaposition of youthfulness, typically seen to be synonymous with frivolity and naivety, with darker elements of the human condition, including romance and pain, brings an astonishing depth to James' work. Furthermore, the sentimentality enwrapped in James' photography, brought out by his fantastic post-processing and the expressions of his subjects, amplifies the ability of each image to reach out toward us as distant observers but leaves us at a yearning distance from the stories of his subjects. I firmly believe James is one of the best young artists currently practicing this styling in his art on Flickr. He is one to watch.
