I've been an avid people photographer for over 30 years. During the past 12 years, I have developed a passion for shooting street photography on the sidewalks, corners, alleys, subways (and even elevators) of New York, Canada and even India. I hope you enjoy the images I've discovered as I continue to explore this genre.

A fun expose on my style of street photography on MERCHANT ARTS.

A follow-up to my very first interview with JAMES ROBINSON PHOTOGRAPHY.

A podcast interview I had with F-Stop Beyond's Ron Dawson:

A very probing podcast interview with Paul Giguere from Thoughts on Photography..

The Brian Lehr Show radio interview with contest judge Luc Sante.

I share my thoughts how I began shooting street photography in my first interview with JR Photography.

One of the masters of contemporary street photography in the world. Joe Wigfall, the king of hipshot. I think that Joe is definitely one of the most humble and soulful photographers on the scene today. The essence of New York City Life: this is essentially the work of Joe, in a rigourous and elegant black and white. I am glad to know him. For me NYC in these years is Markus Hartel and Joe Wigfall, without doubt.

Integrity, honesty, compassion, courage, heart, truth. Hang any of these monikers on Joe’s street work and you’d have it just about right. Joe is a passionate street photographer who merges his artistic sensibilities with the “keeping it real” call of the streets. It’s a hard thing. Few do it justice. He does. Joe doesn’t just take great street shots, he elevates street photography to fine art. His is the sort of work you can come back to time and again as you grow in your own work and see yet another layer heretofore hidden. You come to appreciate how he has lovingly crafted each frame with a full throated clarity of vision. His vision of our shared human condition, anchoring what is in them with what is in us. The good and the bad, the joyful and the painful, the sacred and the profane, the “I” and the “Thou”, all the while doing so with an open compassionate heart and genuine reverence and respect for those whom his lens captures. I’m fortunate to call Joe friend and mentor. He has a kind heart, infectious laugh and a truly generous spirit. And as with so many of us, he shares his time, expertise, humor and guidance while always respecting the artistic process. The world is a flat out better place with Joe in it. He’s one hellaciously fine human being, who just happens to be a stellar street photographer.

Joe's incredible magic touch in discovering street life reality never stops to fascinate! He's cameras turns apparent ordinariness in to very unique NYC street gems!

Even though I've fairly recently discovered Joe's photography, I've found his work inspirational and moving. I have heard some of his interviews and many of his thoughts and words are similar to mine. I feel a kinship with him and wish him many more years of successful photography!

Joe . What can I say about Joe? You want to see a true, I mean TRUE, street photographer? Joe's the man. ' Hey, check out Joewig I tell people, this guy is Mr Street'. Proper old school. Joe's work is the essence for me of what street photography is about. Dynamic, high contrast, punchy street stuff. There is always something going on! These could not be further from random shots. His eyes are darting, his antenna up. He looks for interractions, strange movements, a stare, an expression, a conflict, a tenderness. Hes an artist showing us the street dance of human emotion. He goes fishing every day and comes home and shares his catch with us. Hes also a stand-up guy and been a rock of support help to me here on flickr. Thanks Joe. keep doing what you do.

When I first saw Joe's photos I thought: this is my dream! Since then I have followed his shots almost with envy. I watched his shots and I decided to buy a 28mm, to watch the street from a different perspective. Joe is able to capture the right moments like few others. He is able to push you on the streets of New York, making you feel there, in the middle of the crowd. It would be an honor following him on the pavements of the Big Apple! I have written him, asking him for advices, that he promptly and kindly gave me. In few words he taught me some very important lessons, that helped opening my mind to different perspectives. I follow his shot continuously and if the number of photographers to follow on flickr would be limited to just a few, he would definitely be one of them!

This is the first testimonial I am writing for anyone, and I am glad it’s for Joe Wigfall. Photography is about turning ordinary things into extraordinary pictures. Joe sees beauty in what most people will consider mundane; pictures people like you and me will never thought work as a photograph. That is because Joe doesn’t just take photos; he captures moments: Moments that will not happen again. Moments we did not care about, but when presented to us they are beautiful. From his photostream, you will see street at it’s most glorious and vile. You will see an identity in this place. You will see strangers so intimate it felt like you known them for years. You will see life, and a passion for this art. I am glad I found Joe’s photostream… his love for the streets are inspirations to all.

Joe is a Flickr friend of mine. On Flickr Joe has always commented to the point on other people’s photos but never with any negative criticism, and always with a great sense of humor. I have always looked forward to Joe’s comments but most of all to his photo posts. On a trip back to NY last summer we met and spent some time discussing street photography. Joe is a warm congenial gentleman with a generous spirit. Joe’s photos have a raw immediacy seldom seen in Street Photography but they also contain a subtlety. There is much more to be seen than in a quick glance. The great courage it takes to capture what most people only see in a passing glance is one thing that distinguishes Joe from others who shoot on the streets. Joe is a creative Artist producing dramatic nuanced masterpieces in 1/60th of a second! Joe is never satisfied to sit back and do the same thing over and over. He is constantly trying new equipment and techniques to improve on the great work he has already done. I am very happy that I know Joe the photographer, and Joe the man!

Joe is brave as a Street Photographer should be...it's a risk sometimes that we have to assume...there are situations that we think "I don't care what will happen, but I have to capture this moment...may be the last one"... He captures the real street life without artifices, without lies, without fears. Don't loose his street work if you want to be a real street photographer...each photo is a lesson, an important lesson of courage, attention to the surrounding world and the people that live in it . His photos reminds me a quote from Robert Capa... "if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough"... and Joe is always as close as possible...and following this way he will reach a high Street Photographer status. Look at his portfolio, breathe the street atmosphere he transmits and go to the streets shooting...you will see that your way of seeing the world is going to change a lot...it will be richer, more authentic, more human. It was a pleasure to find him here, in Flickr, and he is a constant inspiration.

The "Street" is a dynamic woosh of constant movement, images criss-cross in chaotic flashes. Your eyes need to be trained for the street. This is no "let's set up a tripod and check the lighting situation" !!! This is a battelfield, and if you wanna come out of it a hero, you have to be brazen and have the balls to aim at another human being, much like a gun, and have the courage to pull that trigger. I dare you to do it as this man does. Keep smokin'it Joewig, Break the rules, S.S.

Joe's photos are not only inspiring, but also informative, and educational. He captures the real and allows his photos to tell truth. His compositions tell the stories of generations, injustice, oppression, love, freedom, joy, happiness and many others. Joe's style is bold and brave. He has had the courage to present to us Street Photography at is best. He gets up close and personal with the subject that he captures. I love what he has done with his craft. He is leading the way that is encouraging those of us who respect the field to take note. Unlike Photojournalism, Street Photography takes the real and reports the truth about it without using techniques to manipulate the outcome. Joe has been true to present the real about the individuals that he has captured. I enjoy the detail and the care that he has put into each of his photos. Each photo is always a job well done. I look forward to seeing the published book of all his work hopefully sometime in the near future.

I find myself really studying the images. I want to know what inspired the shot , what he was thinking while taking the shot and what his reaction was when he saw the out come. I know for me, I am moved by some of the images. He is a gifted artist and I hope he continues to aggressively purse it.
