I have owned my Canon 1000D with an 18-55MM and 75-300MM lense for 6 years now, and I'm still learning, I mainly use the 75-300mm for Wildlife shots and the 18-55mm for mucking about with macro and landscape shots. I hope that my photos have improved over the years but to be honest I just wing it with the settings. I hope that whoever views my photos enjoys them.
