In 2003, I graduated with a master's degree in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. I briefly pursued a career in environmental consulting, but quickly discovered how much I enjoyed being at home with my two sons. My photos document the time of their younger years in Indiana from our many state park hiking adventures to swimming in Lake Michigan to rearing monarch and swallowtail butterflies and more.
In 2019, I discovered the joy of moths. I've catalogued almost 700 moths in my suburban Indiana backyard and over 1,300 moth species across Indiana. Most of my moth photos are on iNaturalist (username: jmjaskula). I began doing public mothing programs to raise awareness and appreciation of these overlooked and misunderstood creatures. Most of my programs take place at The Nature Conservancy's Kankakee Sands prairie restoration in Newton County, Indiana. You can find out more about mothing and other nature programs on the prairies of northwestern Indiana at Friends-of-the-Sands.com.
Most of my photos are taken with a Canon SX40 HS, but in 2023 I moved to a Canon R10. I'm still learning how to use it and I'm hoping my moth photography improves.
