A Life Through the Lens—and Beyond

I'm an old guy who loves photography of all types.

I started my first photography job back in 1961 as a lab assistant at a local studio, when film was the only medium and box brownies were everywhere. Colour photography was considered a passing fad. From there, I moved into wedding photography and later worked at the local TV station, where I gained a well-rounded education in still photography, movie film, and studio camera work. I went on to spend six years as a stills photographer with Channel 10 in Sydney.

Eventually, I transitioned into freelance work in advertising and fashion—work I truly loved.

When my first child was born, I returned to Wagga and joined the family business, where I spent the next 36 years. During that time, I did very little photography.

Later, I discovered digital photography and found my passion for the medium rekindled.

After retiring, I began to find it more difficult to get around, so I discovered a new outlet: Artificial Intelligence Art. It allows me to fully tap into my imagination, crafting detailed prompts to create the images I envision. It’s a lot of fun and I genuinely enjoy the creative challenge.

Recently, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. So, I now take each day as the gift it is—and I hope, when my time comes, I’ll pass peacefully at my computer, doing what I love most.

Whether it’s coincidence or something more, ever since my radiation therapy and starting Endone for the pain, I’ve found myself flooded with creative energy. The ideas come so thick and fast, I can barely keep up.

I’ve written and published three children’s books for my granddaughter, Millie, to remember me by. I’ve also published a coffee table book of my AI artwork, and four novels. So much to do, so little time...

It’s amazing what you can achieve if you just give it a go. Millie has inspired me deeply—I wanted to create something lasting for her, so I began writing stories and illustrating them with AI art. A few months later, my third children’s book has just come back from the printers.

These books are fictional adventures featuring Millie. I want her to have something that reminds her of me, even when I’m no longer here to watch her grow up.

In addition to the children’s books, I’ve also had a coffee table photo book published by Lulu Publications, featuring a selection of my AI artwork.

I don't remember how I came across John's photos in Flickrs... nonetheless, there's no regret in knowing him as a person, a photographer and most of all, a wonderful and caring friend. John has years of photography experiences and carries on his hobby and profession till today. I'm not such a great fan of common insects in real life, but somehow, those "alarmingly huge" insect pictures that John posted have me fascinated. They have suddenly come alive and what a great study you would want especially you're into insects biology. No joke, if you ever want to search for one who understands and knows insects, you can always contact him and he'll come with his big equipment to capture them and present them all in such professional ways that you won't regret. Carry on your brilliant work, John...
