One day while trolling the web for exciting new images I stumbled upon this photograph: www.flickr.com/ph.... A couple of hours later I left jean-fabien's photostream with a new contact, my idea of 'fine photography' altered, and a vow to return often. Many photographers are convinced their images should stay as close as possible to reality, revealing every detail. jean-fabien uses the image not to mirror reality, but as a vehicle to tell a story, to open our eyes to the existence and emotion beneath [beyond?] the surface of the visible...and in doing so alters our perception, changes our lives. With his use of low-tech equipment, gritty subjects, and subdued processing, he revises my sense of things, changes my perspective, gives me an 'art' experience. Bravo! I have featured his work in posts at minimal exposition [ minimalexposition... ], and I hope our collaboration with continue!

This photographer has got a unique vision - and an utterly recognizable approach to transport it. For me a key reason is Jean-Fabien´s love for codes (scribbles, letters, numbers etc.), his shots very often remind me of collages. Many of them are passionately two-dimensional - thus differing severely from those by most photographers who seem to believe that depth is merely a matter of fore- and background. But depth is first and foremost a matter of the "ground" itself. Jean-Fabien carefully arranges this ground. He reveals the unextinguishable truth of this art form: it IS a two-dimensional one and nothing´s gonna change that. I don´t know whether this or any art form is capable of being absolutely honest and truthful at all - but Jean-Fabien is getting fairly close to it.

I have only just recently discovered the work of jean-fabien but I am already a fan. The images he captures are real, dirty and raw... His flickr portfolio offers up enough variety to keep me content. I am very happy to have found him and will keep coming back for more. xx Nai
