I grew up in Sydney before moving to Byron Bay while I undertook a degree in Environmental Science at Southern Cross University in Lismore. I also lived in Shepparton and Brisbane before ending up in Canberra in 1996.

I conduct wildlife research, with my speciality being freshwater fisheries - so yes, I get paid to go fishing and camping by a river.

I've always been a keen amateur photographer, with a lot of my shots taken out in the bush while I'm working. I bought a DSLR (Olympus E410) in December 2007 which prompted me to join Flickr. In March 2010 I purchased a Nikon D90. I've picked up heaps of tips and am looking forward to learning a lot more while ejoying the interaction with other photographers.

I'm currently using a Nikon Z5 but have taken many of my images with a Sony RX100 while doing fieldwork, hiking or exploring by motorcycle (2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro).

Testimonials

Mark has an awesome collection of photos, they are an inspiration to get out and appreciate the world - and of course capture it on 'film'! From platypus to antichinus and from statues to rally cars, Jek has caught it all in a great 'I was there and this is how real it was' way.
