My name is John D. Roach. Photography is my passion during retirement and for the rest of my life. I retired in June 2010 after many years of construction as well as commercial property and facility management. I am a U.S. Navy veteran; I have earned an BBA and MBA.
My photography began some 30 years when I got my first serious camera was a Nikon FM2 film unit that I purchased back in 1980.
I was sitting in a spa's steam sauna at a resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico about 4 years ago. There I spoke with a gentlemen who was 73 years old and not willing to retire because he didn't know what he would do with himself. It was then that I decided I would have a plan. Thus, I set out to develop a list of things I wanted to do and prepared for retirement.
Photography was on the list I developed along with travel and writing. I knew that often I had the photographers eye but lacked knowledge. Thus, I took two digital photography courses at the local community college to see if it really was right for me, bought a Nikon D90 Digital SLR, and started the quest for more knowledge, equipment and I fell in love, again, with photography.
My passion for photography has led me to take over 30 online courses; most with BetterPhoto as well as some with two other schools including New York Institute of Photography where I received my Professional Photography Certification. These courses have kept me focused, growing in knowledge, and developing skills both in photography and the digital darkroom.
I belong to local camera clubs where I continue to learn from others and participate in various challenges. I am also a member of the Photographic Society of America. I also am very active at Nikonians.org which is an online community of Nikon Camera lovers. It is where I have learned many things about this great art and craft. My interests include landscape, seascape, architecture, floral, macro, and wildlife photography.
My wife and I live in Glen Allen, Virginia (near Richmond) with a cat.
I plan to post my favorite images here and hopefully most will be among my best images. that will be a matter of opinion, I am sure. I also will post some articles and move my blog along about travel, retirement, and what the future offers on this painting with light journey and adventure. I am involved in photography exhibits, competitions and am involved in local groups in Virginia and in the past four fine Photography Groups--Wisconsin Camera Club Association, Menomonee Falls Camera Club, Urban Ecology Center Photo Club, and the Coalition of Photographic Arts. I exhibit my printed work frequently as well via social media.
I am active in photographic art groups, lead seminars at photo groups as well as University of Richmond and previously at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
To capture the light in the best way and to display detail, tone, and texture to tell a story, I use a variety of photographic tools and techniques.
My approach is guided by a vision that includes experimenting with ways of seeing light such as using, in addition to color, infrared imagery, painterly effects or conversion to black and white.
Photography is my full time passion now that I am retired after a successful career in engineering and management.
If any of my work captures your imagination, do not hesitate to contact me in order to discover the possibilities to learn more.
