I have been taking photographs for many years, but over the last couple of years or so have really been taking my hobby seriously. I must thank flickr in part for this. There are so many inspirational pictures out there that challenge me to improve technically, and inspire me to work harder at getting the perfect shot! My interests (coming from a biology background) are in nature, and I'm particularly interested in macro photography. I love revealing the tiny things in creation, especially spiders and insects. I also love birds and birdwatching, but prefer to photograph them rather than tick them off a list!
Growing up, I was always exposed to flowers (my father is an orchid and Clivia breeder), and so I also find myself drawn to flowers (especially interesting ones).
My wife and I relocated to Nairobi, Kenya for a number of years, so you will see that the older parts of my photostream reflects our time there. Kenya was a great country to practice and improve my photography. There are so many wonderful creatures to photograph.
We have subsequently returned to South Africa, and while the immediate opportunities for photography have been fewer than Kenya my photography has and is still evolving.
As far as gear is concerned, I am a Canon Man through and through. I had a 350D for a while, but sequentially upgraded to a 50D and now a 7D. I still use both bodies (although the 7D much more) As far as lenses go, I am really fortunate to have a wide variety from wide angle, to extreme zoom. My favourite lenses are a Canon 100mm macro, and a Canon 100-400mm zoom. I also make use of two Raynox macro lenses - a DCR-250 and DCR-150 for my Macro work.
My newest acquisition is a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. This is a great lens!
I have also subsequently added a Lensbaby Composer with several optics. A great creative tool and a fun toy!
My photography style is varied but a really enjoy macro work and photographing Really Small Things.
