JFCL is one of the three main subdivisions of NATO's Allied Command Operations. It is based in Oeiras, near Lisbon, Portugal, at Reduto Gomes Freire, Estrada da Medrosa. Originally built as a fortress back in the 18th century, in 1969 the site underwent a two year construction program to be modernized and prepared to host a NATO command. Over the last years this headquarters has transformed several times to meet NATO’s developing operational requirements. In March 2004, Joint Force Command Lisbon was established to the current configuration.
