James Johnson-Perkins is a filmmaker, artist, curator and writer. He grew up in Folkestone, England where he began his career as a painter and had his first solo show In Margate Library at 22.

 

He has subsequently exhibited widely internationally including the Toyota Museum of modern Art, Japan and recently at the First Play Berlin Festival. Johnson-Perkins, directed and starred in his first short-length film, Nostos (2005), which previewed at the Northern Lights Film Festival, Newcastle.

 

His artwork challenges and question established art-world norms whilst ensuring that artistic pleasure is at the centre his practice. Reflecting a retrospective and nostalgic look at pop culture, exploring iconic imagery and play. Using materials which have a resonance with nostalgic experiences such as Lego and 80’s computer programs.

 

James Johnson-Perkins is a co-director and curator of Novellus Castellum (www.novelluscastellum.co.uk) and is a member of the Artist Group Artpleasure. He currently lives and works in Newcastle, UK.
