I am a sculptor working in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. These photos are generally of my work or of exhibits that I have participated in.
A Special Note on the FLIK Interactive Patterns:
I have an interactive sculpture currently on exhibit in the Art Whino Gallery in National Harbor, Maryland, USA (July 25 - August 29, 2008.) It consists of a MacBook sitting on a pedestal. The work is entitled "Today Now: The p6 Symmetry Group Populated by Live Video Fragments of the Viewer's Appearance."
The MacBook has a built-in video camera just above the screen. A right-triangular portion of the view this camera captures is distorted into an equilateral triangle, and then replicated many times on the screen in a symmetrical pattern that mathematicians call p6. The screen image appears kaleidoscopic, but technically speaking, the p6 pattern is not composed of mirror symmetries, and cannot be produced in a conventional kaleidoscope.
Visitors to the gallery quickly figure out that they can control the pattern on the screen by moving in front of the camera-- or by placing their hands, or sleeves, or faces near it. Pasted-on labels on the MacBook inform the viewers that they can donate their design to the public domain by pressing any key. These are the images that are being uploaded to www.flickr.com/photos/james_mallos .
Several hundred have already been uploaded by the gallery's very creative visitors. These FLIK Interactive patterns are public domain. There is no need to credit the (anonymous) creator of the pattern, nor this sculptor when using them.
