Artist Statement of Veron Israel Williams

Visual memory informs my work. Reminiscing on the place and time where I was born and as well as the present moment, my work illustrates life in Jamaica. I love the fact that I am called an intuitive artist but I have much more then a quick and ready insight. Diving into a deep and abiding cultural identity I paint timeless images that bring viewers into the experience of living in a community that changes in “island time”. A man may still ride his donkey into town but now he might be talking on his cell phone at the same time. Social development aided by grants and loans that before the internet went a lot slower when I was a boy, now fills the houses and family farms in my region with industry. The tools of industry change, but the crops, animals, homes and businesses that comprise the traditions, flavors and beauty of Jamaica have been preserved and my paintings share the experience.
