It would be impossible to discuss Jake's presence on Flckr without mentioning his prowess with social media. One of the first things one notices about Jake after meeting him, is how down to earth he is. Jake's easy going persona brings folks together. Jake uses his networking skills to draw attention to important social causes such as fund raising for public schools and parks, and his passionate fight against autism, and cancer. Jake has used his notoriety to contribute to multiple groups and online communities, such as The Icebox. His gentle jabs and appropriately placed subtle reminders keep the participants of the Icebox amicable and respectful to one another. Jake Rome is social glue. It is his spirit and wry sense of humor that make the participants of The Icebox more then just another social network and more like a "creative" family. True friendships are fostered by Cube "Meet Ups" and Jake’s constant effort to maintain a home for all of us and forum to show and discuss our artwork. Jake helped me to see the full potential of Flickr.

I read articles about it in French and German today. It's been covered by national press. Can you at least not appreciate how cool it is that one guy managed to make this happen? People in Bahrain had a donut party in honor of this! That is simply amazing."

There are two things I have learned about Jake. One, his photos are devoid of bullshit (also known as pretense to the more refined types). Sure, he tries various gimmicks every once in a while, or invents some of his own, but they are fun and honest gimmicks, and he does not get caught up in them. Two, he is a natural organizer of things and people -- both on Flickr and in real life. Just look at his color squares or family camps. He can write one word: "Squirrel!", and people will start posting photos of squirrels as if by command. He just has that effect on people. I could write "Squirrel!" and all I would get would be crickets. Whether such influence is innate or earned remains for the Jake scholars to figure out.

Seriously, theft is the sincerest form of flattery, and I only steal from Jake because I am in awe of his quietly humorous yet stealthily brilliant style. He brings himself to his pictures and to the groups he runs. He is pure gentleman. Also, he was just crazy enough to go with me to an abandoned mental hospital in the middle of nowhere in zero degree weather.
