Howdy!
I grew up in Egypt in a home that was partially the commercial photography studio of my late stepfather, Nadir Hashem. It is in part due to Nadir's influence that I became a graphic designer, art director, and creative director. I didn't, however, take up photography with any degree of seriousness until my mid thirties.
In 2006, I decided that I really ought to learn something about photography. This started a geek's journey into esoteric technical topics that photographers already know about and others find terribly boring. It was all fascinating to me, this technical stuff, but it didn't make me a very good photographer.
Around 2009, life happened, and photography was largely set aside until I visited my father, Art Lester, in London, in October, 2012. He and I had not seen each other for a number of years, but he noticed something right away. He said: "Jake, you have done well for yourself in your new career, but it mainly uses the left side of your brain. I am concerned that you might not be using the right side of your brain enough."
The comment stung. He was right. I had set aside all efforts to grow as an artist, or even to be one at all.
My father's comment motivated me to resume my "serious" photography, this time with a much greater focus (sorry!) on how to make good photographs. How much I have succeeded is something for you to decide, but I believe that I have grown and improved in the years since. My wife, Renate, has helped me immeasurably by lending me her fantastic eye, criticism, and ideas, and has been incredibly patient with the messes I make with all the gear I have accumulated and all the chemicals I use to develop my film!

(Edit: A note about what images I fave and which photographers I follow: A friend of mine commented that I am inconsistent in who I fave and follow because there is such a range of technical ability and quality in the images I like. My answer is that it really is quite simple; I follow and fave the greats to learn from them, I follow and fave many more who are merely as competent as I consider myself to be in order to share in their learning, and I follow and fave the inexperienced who have good eyes in order to encourage them! My favorites will always be a mishmash that reflects this. I have considered putting together a gallery of the shots that I like most from the people I follow and like, and I still might.)

We can find a soul that is revealed little by little through the details and a colour, a shape, light or blur can guide us in reading, everything contributes to immerse us in an aesthetically perfect and harmonious world but never banal and repetitive. Thank you Jake for giving us the world in another light. ^_^

I don't remember if I found Jake first or he found me but would like to say a few words about this gentleman. He is one of the few photographers on Flickr using the white borders but using them correctly. White borders acts like a protective membrane making sure that the story or the composition doesn't touch the neighboring photo, possibly affecting the other images' story. Jake's compositions are beautifully composed and consistently taken in his entire photostream. The subjects in the photos are composed and exposed well, eliminated all chaotic factors. I encourage you to read Jake's 'About Me' page as it explains his intention as a photographer and personal strive to become better and to learn from others as well. Even though both our styles are different, I have learned a lot about compositional rules every time Jake uploads a new photo.

First time I went through Jake’s gallery, I was captivated by the aesthetic of his compositions, his fine use of colours and shades of grey, his acute sense of detail, would it be candid street photography, portrait or still life. His innate understanding of how light is reflected and perceived, his elegant sense of composition, but also his talent that allows him to express parts of his experience artistically, without being complex, were all signs that I was dealing with a sensitive, ingenious, photographer who understands that sometimes the simplest things are the most gratifying. What I much appreciate about Jake is his openness of mind, much indispensable for a balanced human being who uses both sides of his brain :)) His cognitive skills next to his shining sense of empathy, his broad knowledge of different cultures, stand amongst the most precious qualities one can sense in his communicative approach with his fellow humans. A tree is known by its fruits, a man by his deeds. Although he lives miles away, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, which I regret, he managed to instil enough energy for me to awaken a longing desire to plunge into my photography archives, generously sharing his knowledge and experiences in film digitisation. All I can tell him, deep from my heart is “Thank you Jake” don’t change a thing... till we meet... if our call echoes long enough for providence to listen.
