Jaime Lebre is born in Portugal, at the then small village of Pombal on the first day of 1953, and takes contact with photography from a very early age: both his mother and uncle were amateur photographers. His passion for this art accompanies him throughout his life: at the age of ten he receives his first camera, a 127 film TLR, and some five years later he starts using his mother's Zeiss Contax IIIa telemetric camera.
In 1988 he moves to Japan, where he tries various SLR camera until he discovers the beauty of middle format. In this country he meets the professional photographer Ajin Tanaka, who guides his steps in the path of photography.
He returns in 2001 to his home country, settling down later in Covilhã, a city in hinterland Portugal at the feet of the Estrela mountain range. Owing to the weight of both the camera and the years, he mostly abandons the middle format and now photographs mainly in small format film or digital. Jointly with a friend, he participates in the GRANITE photographic exhibition, that took place in Covilhã in November 2021.
Jaime Lebre is particularly fond of black and white photography, both analogue and digital. He seeks to be as comprehensive as possible in the themes he works on, but his gaze tends to fall on the trivial, often drawn by a wabi-sabi aesthetic -- a Japanese school of thought centred on the imperfection and transience of things. That each image should convey a message is his Holy Graal and night photography one of his favorite areas.
