I am in the ballpark of 30. I am formally trained as a biochemist. I spent my professional career working in the medical technology industry until recently when I was rudely forced into early retirement by a pesky chronic disease.
I got into visual arts in the summer of 2008 because it just so happens that drawing, painting, etc. are some of the very few things that are at least a little bit compatible (here and there on good days) with the limitations of my disease. I did some drawing as a kid -- mostly buildings as I aspired to become an architect -- but I took about fifteen years off to pursue other things. I've always had my hands in some form of art at least a little bit, but until 2008, most of my artistic energies were focused toward music and writing. Now I have shifted gears.
Right now, I am primarily developing my technical skills. You'll notice that my pieces are heavy on drawings of celebrities and beautiful people (typical for a beginner), and light on original works. That will most certainly change over time. I have a whole stable of original pieces I want to do (that doesn't necessarily mean the ideas are any good), but I'm holding off on many of them until my technical abilities improve.
