Most interesting shots from the Interactive / Media / Design Group;
Interactive Media Design should be read as though it were divided by commas: Interactive, Media, Design. The title has all the right ingredients, but read as a sentence it might give the wrong idea. It’s not about making that funky flashy website. It can be, if it serves a goal which is larger than simply making such a website. With ‘interactive’ we mean all possible forms of interaction, on-line as well as off-line, man versus man as well as man versus machine/moments/etc. With ‘media’ we mean every developed or yet to be developed medium. And with ‘design’ we mean the use of design as a tool to make ideas or concepts accessable/usable/heard. This also means that it's alright if things are ugly, as long as it serves your predefined goal. It won’t be about designing that great interface or how you can make things move over distance by rubbing a stuffed animal. It will be about educating the designers who live in the present, with respect for the past with a view to the future. Not held back by any medium, mean, methodology, technique or technology.
It is primarily a meeting place. Meetings between people, of course, but also between artistic fields, languages, forms of expression, territories. Is it a study? A research center? A cultural reservoir? It is a little of each but in the end doesn't allow itself to be rigidly catalogued and homogenized. This is also a sign of its uniqueness and innovation. It’s a center for the production of culture. A center for breeding a new generation of designers. Each year a group of young designers is dedicated, through e.g. photography, design, music,video, writing, interactive and visual communication (and ....), to uncover, be part of and create the future.
Since we live in interesting times where opportunities are virtually endless, these opportunities will be your toolbox as a designer when you graduate at the Royal Academy of Art. This means that you should be able to use and design all possible ways to interact with people through any kind of medium to get your story across. Not limited by versions of software, limitations in hardware, people or basically anything at all. If doesn’t exist yet, you should be the spark that starts the fire.
Ideas will be the main product but these ideas should have the possibility of becoming actual products, services or solutions.
Students should not only be able to read the cultural, social, technological and economic trends in society, but should be able to to use this knowledge to identity new, promising concepts in tune with the world we live in today, but more importantly tomorrow.
