INNATE PHOTO AND DOCUMENTATION SITE

- The best way to reach groups of photos you are interested in, unless you have an exact reference or lots of time to browse, is to click on 'Albums' in the menu bar above, and then choose which to look at. You can of course also try a word search in the 'magnifying glass' box in the top right of the black bar above and this may find some of what you are interested in.

The Irish Network for Nonviolent Action Training and Education acts as a network linking those committed to, or interested in, nonviolence and explicitly nonviolent action and training in, or in relation to, Ireland.

You can read about the organisation and the concept of 'nonviolence' on our main website. Regarding permission to use photos, please see the end of this piece.

INNATE has many different resources including our monthly newssheet 'Nonviolent News', plus pamphlets, training materials and workshops (most of which are useable or adaptable for anywhere) as well as a wide variety of free downloadable posters for home printing. These are on our main website, click on it above.

Some, but only some, of INNATE's work has been intertwined with community relations and the development of a nonviolent response to the Troubles and community division in Northern Ireland. But INNATE covers the whole island of Ireland. And we include both 'third party' interventions (mediation and mediative actions) as well as more partisan campaigning for peace, nonviolence, sustainability and rights.

This site contains photos and documentation from and by INNATE and from other individuals, groups and organisations working for justice, peace and nonviolence in Ireland, as well as some other material in relation to 'the Troubles' in Northern Ireland. Some green/ecological and human rights photos are included because INNATE would believe that you cannot be peaceful without an active concern in these areas.

We include copies of documentary material such as leaflets, letters, posters and the covers of books and pamphlets which may be of interest to viewers for a variety of reasons - including for their importance in the story of peace and nonviolence in Ireland, and the role of civil society in the North during the Troubles. Where possible we include information for linking to an organisation or identifying a publication for further study. Our policy in regard to documentary material - some of which is visually mundane and boring - is to include indicative or representational material, and that which is most informative, rather than attempt to be comprehensive (i.e. we have been selective in what we include).

We also recognise that some albums - a useful way to hone in on certain photos - are more comprehensive than others - but including them in an album makes them more accessible. We feel it is better to group photos and material together in this way even where they are a very partial record of the area in question. We always welcome more photos and material for possible inclusion...or suggestions for photos or features.

Material included here is dependent on having relevant photos or documents of suitable quality and interest to be included. A more thorough listing of peace groups in Ireland since the 19th century can be found at innatenonviolence.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Irish...

In relation to treatment of photos, in many instances we will adjust colour and brightness to get what we consider is the best result reflecting the original situation and how it looked. We also crop photos as appropriate to give the best artistic balance for the subject. However we do not manipulate photos beyond that except in a very few cases where we have tried to sharpen a poor quality photo. So any treatment we do is to add to the quality of the photo and not to manipulate the content. Details are available under 'Show EXIF' for each photo. Earlier photos are usually scanned from paper copies.

Permission to use photos: We are happy that photos where we own the copyright should be used for non-commercial purposes by peace, green and human rights groups, or for school and college projects (acknowledgement in the form of listing the web address would be appreciated). If there are photos, of which we are copyright owners, that peace, justice or green groups wish to have and use please contact us. Where we don't have the copyright we can forward your request to those who do.
