We live in Canada near Lake Superior, south of Thunder Bay Ontario. We have a cold continental climate; our coldest temperature is -40 C/F, but lately the coldest has been more like -30 to -35 C. The natural site is wonderful and we were very fortunate to have found it 35 years ago. There was nothing here but the land when we started and most everything has been done the hard way. Our garden is very much a shared effort and more enjoyable because of that. We have been at it now for about 18 years.
The shade garden is perhaps an acre and a half, the rock garden about an acre, then some garden near the house plus lawn. We do it on our own, no help.
Rob's the photographer and he wants to fully cover the garden in its seasons before we get in to our dotage and loose it.
In April 2009 Sharon began adding her photos of our Flickr site.

Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen at least in the photo. He definitely has a soul. Thank you for sharing.

I have never been moved to write a testimonial for anyone on Flickr before, but viewing Illingworths gallery has had such an impact on me, I felt I had to. Rob, apparently the photographer, and Sharon have created two things. Firstly, one of the most personal stunning gardens I have ever seen. They have a creative flair for planting that has created a garden of incredible beauty in an area with a very harsh winter climate. The garden sits in the landscape perfectly, the planting is lush and naturalistic, colours, shapes, forms all blending in a wonderful tapestry. Secondly, Rob has now begun to catalogue every species in the garden in different season with superb, pin sharp, perfectly exposed images. They share their knowledge of latin names by cataloguing every plant in detail. The images are of such quality, I am sure they would be ideal for anyone wanting to illustrate a plantsmans guide. Most of the images are not artistic plant shots, rather they document the colour, shape, form and environment perfectly. This is growing in to a valuable reference for many species ideal for planting in this Canadian environment. I am enjoying hugely just browsing the images. I am sure you will do too. Thank you for allowing many of us around the world an opportunity to see the wonderful garden you have created.
