If the use is for a not-for-profit, public-good, ethical activity, then I usually allow use of my photos without charge, subject to an agreed acknowledgement (and sometimes a copy of the publication, if for print purposes).

If the use is for a commercial purpose, I would expect payment commensurate with the nature of the use. Though I am often willing to waiver this in response to a compelling argument or alternative offer.
