When you click through my photos, you’ll find a lot of maritime pictures.
That’s because I was grown up in Bremen close to the harbor and when I was a little boy my father and I were strolling on Sundays – when the weather was fine - through the ports. Those days in the early 50ties no one was talking about security. So you could walk directly along the piers and nearly could touch the ships. That was very exciting to see all the ships from foreign countries, and to watch the cranes working, shifting the various cargoes from the ships on to the trucks, railcars or into the sheds or the other way around. Also each ship had its individual smell, and also the soundscape of ship engines, forklifts, cranes, trucks and the loud shouts of workers was amazing.
Meanwhile a lot of things have changed. The ships got bigger and bigger, most of the cargos are shipped in containers and security became very important. There's nearly no chance anymore to get close to the ships. Everywhere fences and one can't get without hindrance directly to the quays.
Nevertheless I still love this maritime world and for me it's naturally to combine this world with photography, which is one of my two big hobbies.
