First introduction into serious photography was high school, my junior and senior year ( Journalism I and II )

Shooting with Minolta 35s and Yashica twin reflex cameras, our assignment was simple: Photojournalism "Tell a story."

At 17 years old, I didn't have a clue what the teacher meant by that "tell a story" thing. We had to turn in two black & white 8x10s each Friday for our grade.

One Friday as the teacher looked at my 8x10s she said, "Now, this tells a story."

I replied, "Really, what does it say?".......still not having a clue.

I had photographed our team quarterback laying prone on the ground after being knocked down during a play. There was a hand reaching down to help him back to his feet.

My teacher said, "Look at the hand and arm that is reaching out to help our quarterback....that's not our uniform. That's the uniform of the other team. David, you just "told a story!"

Bing! I got it.

I often have people tell me that my photos tell a story, all these years later. Somehow, I think it got woven into my DNA by that teacher and my entry into the world of photography through the door of photojournalism. Thank you Mrs. Tipton

I still say that I'm.....just a guy with a camera.
