Harold Henry (Hal) Johnston (1930-1985) was a serious amateur photographer and camera collector living in Vancouver from the mid 1950s.
Using a variety of 35 mm and medium format cameras, he exposed, developed and printed some 1500 rolls of black and white film to document thirty years of family and civic life in and around Burnaby, Vancouver, BC, Alberta and the Pacific Northwest.
From 1970 he also photographed artists, sculptors, illustrators and, most extensively, the fine printer/typographer Wil Hudson - each working, at the time, mainly in Vancouver's downtown East Side.
