The purpose of my flickr photostream is - first and foremost - to show mainly flora (but also fauna) of Austria. However, photos shot outside Austria also are included, as well as some shots which do not relate directly*) to any living organisms.

*) No particular reason for that; it's just that I'm too lazy to keep more than one flickr account - so more precisely, reasons are purely personal.

I have created a group of my own about Austrian Fauna and Flora (which will only include photos actually taken in Austria); however, so far I am the only active member - and as I am not in the business of promoting groups, be it one of my own or any other one, this could remain so for some time. But if you're interested please feel free to join the group, and add photos of your own.

Geography tags as well as latitude/longitude indicate location; Latin species names are given where relevant.

Licence:

Part of my photos have a non-commercial creative commons licence, the rest has copyright reserved; please respect the licence conditions.

Even photos with a creative commons licence must not be used commercially; if you want to use any of my photos commercially then please ask for charges.

Abbreviations:

AMSL = above medium sea level; here only given in metres (m), no feet measures given at all

msm = metra supra mare = the same thing in Latin (and already including the measure of metre)

I decided to switch to msm measures in April 2011 which might be confusing, especially as I didn't change AMSL in the description 2.275 photos already uploaded before; I switched to msm because it is the abbreviation used by Austrian scientists, and as I never used feet it should be clear nevertheless.

Also, quadrants used for botanical mapping of Central Europe are given (quadrants are roughly squares in CE region), which are defined by 6° latitude (Breite) x 10° longitude (Länge), and which are sub-divided into 4 sub-quardants of 3° lat/5° long.

The Quadrant of Vienna, to give an example, is 7764 (48°12-48°18' N ~ 16°20'-16°30' E), sub-divided into 7764/1 (NW), 7764/2 (NE), 7764/3 (SW), 7764/4 (SE). The one north to that one is 7664 (48°18'-48°24' N ~ 16°20'-16°30' E), the one south to it 7864, the one west to it 7763 and the one east to it 7765 - you can work out quadrants all over Central Europe from there.

Of course, in higher northern latitudes those quadrants become increasingly narrower oblong, as they do if you go far into the south only that they become increasingly broader oblongs.

Vascular plants only - Tracheophyta; this is the source I rely on for most plant identifications.

The Botanik im Bild site is based on this scientific field guide, and the Verein zur Erforschung der Flora Österreichs also is building an online database - see Flora von Österreich for that, and the 'Wiki-Portal' (however, only open to scientists - so this is a scientific flora and not one made by amateurs and semi-professionals) Flora von Österreich.

A fourth edition is forthcoming (publishing date yet unknown), it will extend in areal from Austria, Liechtenstein, Südtirol to the entire Eastern Alpine region: so it will include Austria, Liechtenstein, Alpine Southern Germany, Eastern Alpine Switzerland, to Southern Tyrol (Südtirol) the entire Italian Eastern Alpine region will be added, and south it will extend to Slovenia (Alpine region, slightly overlapping into Illyrian zone as the borderline between both will depend on whether you use geological, botanical or climatical criteria).

Thus, for now, I still will rely on taxonomy of the 3rd edition - only where it is clearly outdated I will change plant names.

The numbers used for my albums follow Fischer, Exkursionsflora for plants, and else are arbitrary.

Coordinates given are given slightly incorrectly in some cases (e. g. rare species or endangered habitats).

Disclaimer: ID is solely in my responsibility; I excuse in advance for any inaccuracy I might have committed (of which there could indeed be quite some). Please notify whenever you detect, or even suspect an incorrect identification, and I will follow up on it.

All my species photos published on the www are linked to from my sokolindex blog which is kind of a map of my flickr photostream.

See also my sokolblog.

Finally, a PS about networking: I know, much on flickr is about so-called networking - commenting on each other's photos and such. You're welcome to do so with my photos but please accept my excuses for not taking part there. I am usually not browsing the flickr albums, and for this very simple reason I also will rarely comment on other user's photos.
