Nearly all the photos you'll see on this site will be mine so I suppose I should be the one to fill in the blanks on the profile.
My wife, Catherine Cartwright-Jones, owns and operates several websites devoted to henna and things related to henna, chief among them is the Henna Page. The Henna Page has hosted conferences and meetups for many years and it was always a problem getting enough good pictures from these events because, although nearly everyone brought a camera to the gathering, there was nobody tasked with doing photography and the people attending were busy with all the conference activities.
In 2005, I offered to travel with Catherine to the conferences and concentrate on taking pictures. I have no interest in henna myself, but many year's experience in my former career as a radio reporter and documentary producer, taught me how to observe and capture people's interest and excitement in what they do and make it visible to others.
Since stepping into my role as the Henna Page "staff photographer," I've gone through three still cameras, recently moving up to a Nikon D80. I feel as if I've made a quantum leap in my technique since I started using the Nikon. It's a great tool and definitely gives me something to live up to. I also do some desktop video for the Henna Page, which you can see on the Henna Page's YouTube channel.
I've become enough of a familiar figure at Henna Page events that most people go on about whatever they're doing and pay no attention to me and my camera. This allows me to do what I enjoy most...using the camera to capture people being themselves.
Our Flickr page will be the place where we display images from past conferences, parties and special events. It will also become the target for the "past event" links on hennaconference.com and a showcase for special projects.
