I like motion, to capture movement in the everyday and in the passage of time. I am drawn to photographs that bring a pointed emotion or feeling, such as to convey silence, hope, wonder. sadness. I see these things most in catching birds in flight, in the landscapes of eastern washington, in the old homesteads that are the remants of western expansion. there is beauty, grace and elegance. and history, a sense of time, fleeting moments and in each their passing. I love the strength of emotion a photograph can bring, the charge it brings, in the capturing and viewing. but the best shots i realized maybe come when the hunt subsides, and there is a subject, calm and focused framing. i like the small revelations along the way, such as one descending into valley at 5 am, the sun rising and casting light across the thick fog. it could have been planned, maybe, but the beauty was in the being there, seeing the remants of an old town emerge as the fog lifted and shifted. the structures were as they were only in the moment. I also love family photos for the fun, the memories and the sharing, and photos of my dog Hannah for the same reasons and that there can never be too many because each is different. I love the feel of my camera in hand, how time and all else falls away in it. And I love how others' perceptions can alter your own - the way you see and approach a scene, and the reminder that things are not always what they seem, or what you see. And sometimes they are.
