There was one thing Haggis Chick never told me when I put her on the ferris wheel. You would think someone with a fear of heights would tell the operator before I strapped her in. She didn't. She was being filmed as part of a reality show for people confronting their fears. I strapped in her and the cameraman next to her, and sent her on their way. When they reached the top, I heard a scream, but not a scream of fear. There was a giggle and an ovation and when they came back down, I realized they looked different. They had swapped clothes! This is how she confronted her fear, and after she got off we went out for some coffee and talked about the things that inspire her photography, how we each use technology to create our images and about how disgusting haggis actually is. Also found out she has a fear of coffee, so after one cup of coffee, I was wearing some really awesome high heels, a very soft cashmere camisole and a revealing mini skirt. I'm glad I shaved that day.

A little over a year ago, I saw a photo by Haggis Chick on Explore, and I made her one of my first contacts on flickr. I’ve never regretted adding her since she is a woman who never fails to impress. She characterizes all her photos with bawdy humour and plucky dialogue. She handles all her comments with cheekiness, thoughtfulness, and aplomb. She shares my birthday, so that immediately makes her awesome. And she is frigging amazing with a camera. I have watched this woman strive to achieve various photographic techniques in her self-portraits and master them with sexy Haggis Chick style. Perhaps what is even more impressive is her ability to apply these techniques with incredible effectiveness to her portraits of friends and family and landscapes as well. With every upload, she shows her drive and determination to better her photography, and I am continually awed by the strides she makes in her work. I wonder what my year of flickr would have been the like without this woman around. Probably duller. I don’t like to think about it. After all, Haggis Chick is pretty fantastic.

Haggis Chick is one of the very first photographers I ever added as a contact. I was impressed with her creative ideas for photos, especially her self-portraits, as anyone who has tried to shoot them consistently knows; it’s hard to come up with new ideas. Haggis Chick doesn’t seem to have this problem, and whether it’s her, or her alter ego, Freda, who occupies the photo, I’m distinctly aware of a personality who likes to play, and make trouble. Both are qualities I admire, and even try to emulate with my own photos, and not many photographers do that for me. Plus she would make a great pub buddy. We’d tear the place up!
