First of all, a sincere thank you to all the visitors who have viewed my shots and left comments.
Most of these photos are taken in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. I enjoy walking my dog on the long sandy spit at Iona Beach and along the network of Richmond Dykes. My challenge is to see if we can get close enough to photograph the many birds that we encounter. By now, my dog has learned not to chase or bother the birds we meet and seems rather bored by my hobby!
I use old manual focus lenses coupled with digital slr's.
Why the Panasonic G1?This camera is a manual focus dream. Since it is a micro 4/3 format camera, it can mount every manual lens ever made. The electronic viewfinder is great and I get a high percentage of critical in focus shots. The big negative is no built in shake reduction. With the 2X crop factor it is a birding dream!
Why manual lenses? I get great pleasure from the tactile feel of manipulating these 30 year old plus lenses. I don't mind deleting shots because the focus is off. I hate missing shots because the camera decides not to fire, or the lens is hunting to grab a focus! An additional upside is that manual lenses are considerably less expensive than modern automatic focus lenses, and I can indulge testing out a variety of different lenses.
