I am an artist that works in a number of disciplines, though my practice is driven with the use of short-lived or forgotten materials that are often found on derelict sites. These materials speak, metaphorically, of a specific narration or history (frequently referencing class and social stature) in relation to the area they are found. As well as found objects, I use ephemeral sculptural pieces, and often work in collage with found images.
I work along themes such as ‘ownership of land’ and ‘claiming space’, and the seen and unseen tensions that are brought about through these actions; whether in a public/private/political space or on a global scale.
Important aspects of my installation pieces are the feelings I generate in the audience through the ‘recreation’ of space - such as comfort, uneasiness, or the uncanny and unfamiliar yet intriguing. I am concerned with manipulating the space physically, which in turn manipulates the audience into feeling a particular sense. Working in installation, I try to bring about questions to the audience in that space, such as ‘what will happen?’ and ‘who is really in control?’
Included in other aspects of my practice and research are explorations into the philosophical notion of the Sublime, and the term ‘human exceptionalism’.
