Hello Flickr world!
2-16-13:
I'm finally in an official photography course! I've shot some interesting subjects, but haven't really posted many since we can only submit Jpegs and I haven't edited the RAW files yet. Stylistically, I've got two polar opposites that I like: colors that pop and high contrast B/W. Perhaps the best thing to come out of this course will be a difference in my processing style. My T.A. was curious to see my work and the biggest comment was not over-processing. I like the punchy style, but it can go a little too far, at which point I end up throwing out the changes and resetting to the defaults.
Thanks again,
Gregory O'Shea
UPDATE:
I've been posting for almost a year now and it's amazing to see how much my photos have evolved since January. When I look at some of my older photos and the editing/processing and compare it to now I am amazed at the change in such a short time. I almost want to go back and re-edit some of my earlier images, but I want to keep them as they are to show the change in editing style and technique. There are some times I "miss" the convenience of shooting Jpeg, but then I look at some of my edited RAWs and WOW, I will never go back! At first I was meandering around aimlessly hoping to see something and shoot it, but not really having any intentions, but now when I go out I know what I want and how to get that image.
I'm still wishing for a 50mm 1.4, and when my Rebel needs replacing (probably not for 3+ years) the 5D Mk. III + 24-105 f/4L kit is screaming at me.
I'm still looking for some feedback on my images and critiques for things to improve on.
Thanks all,
Gregory O'Shea
ORIGINAL
I'm starting in DSLR photography with my Canon T3i. I've been experimenting and trying to develop a style so I will take any advice or (constructive) criticism. From my RAW edits, I can see I like really contrasty images with vibrant colors and high contrast B/W.
I started out with a Canon point and shoot and felt... limited... It took nice shots... if it wanted to. Some of my favorite shots were taken on that camera, but I felt like it was hit and miss, more on the miss side in anything outside of optimal conditions.
I kind of put the cart before the horse in photography, graduating from Youtube University before I even had a DSLR. The one benefit I did find though, I better knew how to use the camera out of the box. I still need to do some exposure correction, but I'm getting better tuned in to what the camera wants.
I was shooting jpeg only (*gasp) to save space on my HD and card, but they were way flat and washed out. I then moved to RAW+jpeg for only my 365 shots to edit them artistically. Now I shoot only RAW+jpeg. I keep the jpeg as a preview to choose which RAWs to edit.
Wish list... 50mm 1.4
100mm Macro (The Shoe only lets you have 100mm lenses so... kind of stuck there, plus I want to shoot macro)
Light source/soft box... a single desk lamp and poppie-uppie-flash only go so far...
Side note: I do find it funny that some of my favorite shots are the least viewed and some of my least favorite/rushed shots have the most views.
