Nathan Kensinger was born and raised in San Francisco, California, and is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores hidden urban landscapes, off-limits structures, environmental disaster zones and other liminal spaces. His work encompasses photography, film, installation, curation, and writing.

 

Kensinger’s photographs have been exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, and in numerous New York City galleries. His films have screened widely at film festivals, including Slamdance, Black Maria, Rooftop Films and the SF IndieFest. His work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, PBS NewsHour, Wired Magazine, New York Magazine and The New Yorker.

 

Kensinger's photo essays are currently featured in the bi-monthly column Camera Obscura at the website Curbed. An archive of over 150 of his photo essays exploring the abandoned and industrial edges of New York City can be seen at kensinger.blogspot.com.

 

Kensinger received a BA in Documentary Film from Hampshire College in 2001. He has received grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council and The Hudson River Foundation, and support from the NY Department of Environmental Protection. His photographic work is in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Historical Society, the Brooklyn Library and the Museum of the City of New York.
