Gordon's Trains
Drag to set position!
Welcome to a collection of photographs documenting and celebrating a remarkable model train layout.
The railroad modeled represents the Canadian Pacific Railway's southern mainline, often known as the Kettle Valley route through the south Kootenay region of British Columbia, specifically the division between Cranbrook and Nelson. The era represented runs from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s. Locomotives, rolling stock and vehicles can be set up to represent any time frame in that period. Thus, sometimes all steam is run, all diesel or a combination of both. Steam powered locomotives are primarily consolidations and mikados, although 0-8-0 switchers work the yards and decapods, switch, serve as helpers or operate on their own. Pacific type locomotives come in from the east and are turned at Cranbrook as the grades to the west are too steep for them.
Early diesel locomotives include Alco (MLW) units such as FA-1, FB-1, RS-2, RS-3 and S-3 and S-4. The latter had a long service on the division serving as yard switchers. The former units were shipped east where grades were easier and they were replaced with Fairbanks Morse (CLC) units such as the H 16-44, the H 24 - 66 (Trainmasters) and CPA 16 - 4 and CPB 16 - 4 (C-Liners). They were soon joined by EMD units of the GP 7 and GP 9 configuration.
The layout is in a room approximately 55 feet by 35 feet and it was actually built by one person between August and Christmas 2002. The work went quickly due to the use of an insulation board base and Woodland Scenics plaster cloth. Over 70 locomotives from the various time periods are available to work on the layout.
