I was born in Iran, raised in Sweden, educated in Britain and the United States. I have been telling stories through my pictures and documenting events since I was a little girl. Always drawn to images, I was taught how to draw and paint in oils by my artist mother Oranus Dabestani from a young age and began to develop black and white films in darkroom in middle school. At 14 I managed to convince my parents to allow me to take the regional train (alone) so I could attend photography classes at Medborgarskolan in Gothenburg. After much "research," I bought my first ever camera a Canon Snappy AF from a post-order catalog in Sweden, this choice was determined by my meager pocket money but firmly established me as a life-long Canon shooter!

These days I am still deeply passionate and involved in new technology, aesthetics, and visuality. I am currently involved with several projects, including the making of a short film on the women of the Arab Spring and an imaginative experimentation with photomontages. A part from my series titled "Tavalodi Digar/Another Birth: A Series of Photographic Verisimilitude" was published in Tableau Magazine (14th Edition - February 2014), edited by the distinguished Iranian photographer Hasan Sarbakhshian.

I am a member of Professional Women Photographers, Inc., and my work has been exhibited at The Photographers' Gallery in London, and published in The New York Times, Aljazeera English, Yahoo! Breaking News, CNN, BBC, Amnesty International, Jadaliyya, and Egypt's Al-Ahram Weekly Magazine among others.

After a full-time career as an academic, I established Dr. Bashi™, maker of world's first-ever children's educational wood blocks in Persian "Farsi" and pedagogically advanced Arabic (made ethically in USA). Dr. Bashi™ is the result of a dream I had cultivated over the years because of my background in childhood education and creative arts along with my search for the very best educational and eco-friendly toys and organic, gender-neutral clothing for my children. I am now a part time professor of History at Pace University, continuing to combine my scholarly and pedagogical work.

On Facebook, I run several activist campaigns, including the feminist Brainquake, the anti-racist No Blackface Hajji Firuz in my Nowruz and the Iranian branch of the global

One Billion Rising, the latter together with Mahsa Shekarloo.
