To me, the most important thing about art is that it communicates. And while technical proficiency might increase the vocabulary of the photographer, it's useless if nothing is being said. Imagery needs pathos and meaning or it fades into obscurity. So if I have a choice, I would rather make art that is hated and remembered than a piece that is fawned over but quickly forgotten. That is, if I can't have the adoration and memorability at the same time.
