Michael Shaw is an artist, musician and educator based in London. His interdisciplinary practice dances around notions of failure, control and mis-direction, that he explores through live performances, public interventions, staged events, assemblages and experiments often teetering on the point of collapse. Since completing his BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London (1999) he has participated in national and international exhibitions and events such as fig-2, ICA, London, UK (2015), Ha Ha Road, Oriel Mostyn Gallery, Llandudno, Wales, UK (2012), No Soul For Sale, Tate Modern, London, UK (2010), Naught to Sixty, ICA, London, UK (2008) and Destroy Athens, 1st Athens Biennial, EL (2007). Often working under an alias, he has produced work across different platforms that include radio (Erm, The Feedback Phone-in, Resonance 104.4 FM, 2004-06), television (Random Acts, Channel 4, 2012), contemporary dance (The Rehearsal, Stuttgart, DE, 2010).

 

In 2003, he founded The Gluerooms, a DIY live art and experimental music platform in London, where he worked as artistic director until 2012. In 2004, he co-founded The O.A.P (Open Arts Platform) in Deptford, London, a non-profit gallery and artist studios, where he worked as head curator until 2006. From 2007-2009, he curated and stage managed the House of Dolls in Joe Rush's (Mutoid Waste Company) Trash City at Glastonbury Festival, UK. Alongside his practice, he has worked as a guest lecturer at educational institutions such as Goldsmiths, University of London and The Bartlett, UCL, London, UK and delivered artist talks and workshops at institutions including Pitzer College, Scripps College, California, US, Science Museum, Institute of Contemporary Arts and Kinetica Gallery, London, UK. Shaw is the current Artist-in-Residence at Coopers Technology College, Kent, UK.
