a Psychiatrist's view
Drag to set position!
Hailed as “ photography’s new conscience “ Glenn Losack a “Psychiatrist/physician M.D., renowned photographer, singer-songwriter, author, 43 years around the globe in over 50 nations ( years in INDIA and the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ), when stateside lives in the EAST VILLAGE of Manhattan, is SEMI RETIRED from MEDICINE though still practicing ( in the rural areas of the USA that cannot get physicians to practice in parts unknown) via Tele-psychiatry.
Glenn’s photography has been featured in National Geographic, (both the magazine and online ),
Asian Geographic ( front cover and story), Popular, American photography and many others too numerous to document here.
He has garnered top awards/ prizes for his work worldwide, many VIPs own his work including YOKO ONO wife of BEATLE JOHN LENNON.
Getty also sells his work on line.
He sums up his photographic work this way:
“ The world has its beauty and much unsightliness.
I feel there is beauty in both,."
A great deal of Dr. Losack's photography surrounds Leprosy.
A disease rampant in South Asia and low on the totem pole when it comes to funding and social awareness.
People afflicted are stigmatized, even chastised like no others in this world.
His work is partial to the third world, those who have no advocacy, social outcasts, the homeless, the walking invisible unfortunate souls of our world.
"I believe strongly that photography can educate, enlighten and raise awareness of the horrible plight of millions who roam this planet barely surviving usually by begging."- GL

16. Glenn is also a Board Certified Psychiatrist / Physician ( MD ) and since 2015 via TELE MEDICINE /TELE-PSYCHIATRY he has been treating AMERICANS in socio economically deprived rural areas of the USA ( underserved areas ) that do not have enough doctors to treat psychiatric illness. Psychiatrists do not want to work in such rural areas and Dr Losack now has tried to fill the void and has a psychiatric practice with at least 300 patients he helps with the blessings of modern technology.
This is called Locum tenens work and he has done this for 23 years. He has worked in every aspect of Psychiatry all in underserved communities at jobs that most psychiatrists decline taking.
He has been in the NJ NY PA prison system for 23 years and worked face to face with the most dangerous mentally ill patients in the US prisons.

But as you know "unsightliness" is the reason to close our eyes and to feel our mind revolt. That you don't let us do.... You open our eye on that, but our mind known this tragedy before. Difficult to understand how in our so "beautiful world", with these 1% which earn more then 99% of others, we can let this defeat of the humanity kill. An hope, small consolation, is to see how some persons and Associations try to fight against that other name a "fatality".

"The years that I have known Glenn (Glenn Losack, MD) as a fellow physician and a compatriot, he has always amazed me with his capacity to see the world through a lens, both actual and metaphorical, with a passion for beauty and ordinariness, a revolt and a subterranean reflection, a sense of joy and a stern reminder of justice, all at the same time. He has travelled far and wide to hold these images for him, as well as for his viewers, at present and in future. Although critics may say that in many ways, his works imbibe the spirit of both Jacob Riis and Diane Arbus, Glenn's canvas is much larger in scale and locale. Yes, one may choose to "unsee" them and (as a Psychiatrist he knows why), but cannot "deny" their existence, both inside and outside of us. Undoubtedly, he is a significant presence in Street Photography, whose works have been recognized by both National and Asian and Asian Geographic, and will keep enriching us visually and (if I may say) spiritually. Because of his stunning, enticing and dramatic photographic images, the beauty of his work entices us to see all that exists in our world - beautiful landscapes, but mostly the poor suffering with leprosy, the malnourished in India, the homeless beggars, etc.... colors, composition, the eyes and souls of suffering people everywhere draw us into his corner of the world. He shows us haunting images of individuals, any of whom could have been us. The suffering we see is all around the world, each of of sees it or experiences it, or both. Yet, we try to avoid it, deny it, run away from it. What is this power that Dr Losack processes that temps us to be a voyeur of the terrible suffering and pain of those in a more than dreadful situation. Does it make me feel guilty or responsible to be attracted to such colorful, beautifully grotesque images? I wonder what is my role, my duty, and my responsibility as I witness these almost pornographic images of the miserable, suffering, lepers of the world. These often difficult photographic images are tastefully mixed with those of amputees, beggars, and homeless adults and children barely clothed in rags. Yet somehow, Dr Losack manages to document these tremendously important pictures in a manner where he shows us the truth in the world, without taking advantage of the human dignity of these individuals, all of whom process the same feelings as us (emotional and physical). He highlights their plight on earth and forces us to ask ourselves what should we be doing to help change the dreadful status of their lives. Somehow Dr Losack has the gift to sensitively balance our pornographic attraction to voyeuristic, grotesque images of human misery on an unforeseen scale, along with our wondering about how can we help. Is it adequate for us to write a check to the Leprocy Mission to help alleviate suffering of millions ? This act of sterile donation may, in fact, be a necessary evil, to bring funds to those who need the treatment most. Perhaps writing a tax-deductible contribution alleviates the guilt in our soul, but this action of, so called benevolence, seems too clean and sterile to me. It’s an easy way out for most well-to do Westerners who are more concerned about their bottom line at tax time than about the root cause of this enormous problem of poverty, illness, and suffering. In the end, if this is how mankind will manage to control this scourge by the goal of 2035, then I think the end justifies the means in this case.

Dr. Losack’s photographic work is a national treasure. Occasionally reminiscent of that or Diane Arbus, though less gratuitous and more soulful, Dr. Losack’s images often capture the depth of feeling of those of W. Eugene Smith. Not that all of Dr. Losack’s work is easy to look at—to the contrary—extremes of poverty, of disease, and of misery often make me want to un-see what I have just experienced. But the power of Dr. Losack’s relentless honesty, his explosive access, and most of all his almost super-humanly kind heart, all come through intensely and powerfully. Add to his ability to pull the viewer into the picture emotionally, spiritually, almost magically, the most remarkable sense of composition, and one may begin to appreciate the genius—and I don’t use the term lightly—of Dr. Losack’s photography. The number and range of images makes it abundantly clear that Dr. Losack has devoted practically his whole life to traveling the world for his art. I’d be remiss if I failed to mention many of Dr. Losack’s funny images, the simply visually stunning uses of shape and color, and his fascinating experimental images. Dr. Losack has a unique eye, a uniquely caring heart, and an uncanny ability to make me feel through his brilliant images.

Dr. Losack's photographs remind me of the work of Jacob Riis. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob... ). Our photographic record is filled with the things we love to look at. Riis and Dr. Losack record the things we must look at if we are to be fully compassionate and human. This remarkable gallery of work should be required viewing in our schools and universities. It reveals life as it is lived by much more of the population than the small percentage walking around with the latest full frame mirrorless SLRs and the expensive glass. Those of us in the latter category have some responsibility to those in the first group. Dr. Losack shows us the way. I created a group called Human Happiness. Flickr is filled with grins and good times. I try to find the instances of deeper happiness; that occur in all cultures, on all continents, and among people in all conditions. Sometimes I see people living in the most deplorable conditions who, nevertheless, betray an inexplicable joy in spite of their situation. Often, it is the result of relationships that transcend their material surroundings or wealth. I see a little of that in Dr. Losack's work. But more often, I can only see my own sins of wasteful consumption staring back at me. Thank you for your work.

He could have been born in India but does it really matter ..humanity is a world without borders and he shows it through the rich tapestry of his images. Mind you his images are not to shock and awe..to sensationalize dire human needs , he wants you too see his images through compassion , through tolerance and through your inner being. This is Dr Glenn Losack MD renowned psychiatrist, lyricist, poet, musician, and a very opinionated man..he does he wants to do..but yet like all of us he has a Muse ..a Muse that has given him a reason to Live..or Relive . Actually the good doctor needs no testimonials ..his pictures adorn covers of National Geographic and he has his site on Better Photo.. It took a lot of convincing on my part to move his collection to Flickr which has a larger and diverse viewership , the best of the best. That he allowed me to showcase his pictures at my site speaks volumes of his love for me..and that he loves my family like his own, and he loves Marziya too. I hope all my friends and well wishers on Flickr will see Glenns pictures and evaluate them with encouragement and truthful comments. Welcome Home Doc."
