I've been a serious amateur photographer for more than 50 years. After I was given a 35mm camera and an enlarger when I was 12, my bedroom began doing double duty as a darkroom--an arrangement that continued through two moves and high school. As a yearbook photographer during undergraduate studies in the Chicago area, I had unlimited access to film and a well-equipped darkroom. I seriously contemplated a professional career in photography, but I wound up instead as a doctoral student at Stanford University and thereafter as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have been devoting more time to avocational photography since retiring a few years ago.
