I thought about it for a long time, but I set my goal: 100 street portraits of strangers.
Although I'm not shy, it's still a bit awkward to approach someone and ask if I can take their picture.
I chose specifically to use my oldest lens: the Minolta 58mm f1.2 at full aperture.
Really sharp? No...
Atmosphere? Yes, definitely! And that's more important than sharpness.
The series is shot in black and white. Color doesn't add much; it would be more distracting if there were a lot of color in the background. I also have a preference for black and white, so the choice was easy.
With such a small DoF, things can go wrong. But that doesn't always have to be a problem!
This photo is not technically perfect. Here too, the focus is on the “wrong” eye: the eye that is furthest away from you. Although that bothers me a little, I don't really mind it that much. Yes, next time I'll pay a little more attention... but somehow it doesn't really bother me because of the sharpness gradient of the lens.
The atmosphere is there. I still think it's a nice photo.
Would you keep this photo or throw it away?
